DAS: Elastic Rayleigh Scattering

Distributed Acoustic Sensing relies on coherent Rayleigh scattering. When external vibration or acoustic events such as digging, footsteps, vehicle movement or leak noise act on the fiber, they create tiny changes in the optical path and phase of the backscattered light.

By analyzing these elastic scattering signals along the fiber, the system can reconstruct vibration events and locate them over long distances.

DTS: Inelastic Raman Scattering

Distributed Temperature Sensing uses Raman scattering. Unlike elastic scattering, Raman scattering is an inelastic interaction where photons exchange energy with the fiber molecules.

The backscattered signal contains Stokes and Anti-Stokes components. Because the Anti-Stokes signal is highly temperature-sensitive, the system calculates the temperature profile along the fiber by comparing the signal ratio at each location.
